Both Patchwork and the MB-7 multiband mixer from Blue Cat Audio have been significantly improved – we catch up on what’s new herein.by David Baer, Sept. 2018Blue Cat Audio has become known for its innovative plug-ins that, in particular, excel at hosting audio plug-ins in all current mainstream formats (VST, VST-3, AU and AAX). We examined two of these, MB-7 Mixer and Patchwork, in July of 2016 – you can read that review. Although we include a summary of the functionality here, refer to the original review for full details. Mostly we will be concentrating on just the new developments in this brief catch-up coverage.Essential facts: these plug-ins are compatible with all major current DAWs, and Patchwork also operates as a standalone program.

The supported formats are VST, VST 3, AU and AAX and are 32-bit and 64-bit compatible. Activation is customer-friendly and no dongle is required. Demo downloads that impose only reasonable restrictions are available.MB-7 MixerIn brief, MB-7 is a multiband plug-in host that offers up to seven bands.
It is itself hosted in a DAW as a conventional plug-in (same formats as named above), and it acts as a sub-host for other plug-ins.You may load any of your plug-ins into an MB-7 frequency band for a custom multi-band capability. The hosted plug-ins can be those from any company supporting VST, VST-3, AU or AAX formats (excluding any plug-ins that are restricted to use only within a specific DAW).
Mixing 32-bit and 64-bit versions is not supported, which is hardly unreasonable. You may mix and match as desired. For example, if you wish to apply dynamics processing in the low frequency range, saturation in the mids, and transient shaping in the high range, that can be done. Up to four plug-ins can be loaded into each band (two pre-fader and two-post fader). That’s pretty much all there is to it – it’s simple and straightforward and potentially extremely useful. If you have any single-band audio plug-in, with MB-7 available, you now have a multiband version of that plug-in. But, as just mentioned, you are not limited to just one kind of processing in all bands. The primary thing that’s new is that MB-7 comes loaded with 28 internal effects of wide variety. You can see examples of the UIs of these onboard effects in the composite image at the top of this article.
Onboard effects include EQ, filters, a pitch/frequency shifter, delays, reverb, modulation effects, dynamics processing, a bit crusher, a wave shaper and more. With its own effects on board, Blue Cat can now offer factory presets. Prior to the availability of onboard effects, pre-configured presets were, of course, not possible since what plug-ins were available on a user’s DAW could not be known. But there is much more that’s new and useful. Although there is no single major killer feature, there are numerous welcome usability improvements.
